Healing Is In Your Hands

by Cristina Smith

Hand gestures are the oldest form of communication between humans and even today we shake hands as an initial formal greeting. Through our hands, we receive thousands of bits of information daily. Impressions of hot, cold, soft, coarse, sharp, slimy and silky come from the empirical data we gather and send to our brain for processing so as to formulate a response strategy.

Beyond the basic physical sense of touch, hands may also be used as diagnostic tools. All of the body's functional areas are reflected and may be stimulated on the hands. As a revealer of the potentiality of fate, palmistry is one of the oldest divinations around, with references in 3rd century Chinese and Indian records. Sacred hand movements are common in spiritual traditions globally and there are yoga movements specifically for hands and arms called mudras.

I like to call hands a God-force delivery device, because in so many creations, mundane to magnificent, hands play an intimate role. When we are inspired to make something, from lunch to emails to masterpieces, we realize that vision through our hands. Another use of hands as an energetic delivery device is healing touch.

Touch is a deeply healing human experience. The laying on of hands as a treatment to heal, soothe and comfort has been around for time immemorial, recorded as early as 1552 BCE in Egypt on the Ebers Papyrus. In the 400 years before this era, the Greeks were using therapeutic touch in Asclepian temples for healing the sick. The Bible has many references to the laying on of hands for medical and spiritual applications, especially the 'miraculous' healings of Jesus.

Many talented and dedicated researchers through the centuries like Paracelsus and Franz Mesmer made contributions to our knowledge of healing with the hands. In the 1500s, the physician Paracelsus (Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim) founded the sympathetic system of medicine, according to which the stars and other bodies (especially magnets) influenced humans by means of a subtle emanation or fluid that pervaded all space. He thought that vital force was not enclosed inside an individual but radiated within and around him or her like a luminous sphere, which could be made to act at a distance. In the late 1700s, Mesmer hypothesized his healing results came through the enlightened use of a universal energy he called fluidum. He postulated that fluidum was a subtle physical fluid that filled the universe and was the connecting medium between all living things, the earth and heavenly bodies. He found that the best source of this universal force was the human body itself and that the most active points of energetic flow were the palms of the hands. He discovered this energy was magnetic and, in 1831, a committee of the Medical Section of the Academie des Sciences examined his theories of 'animal magnetism' and accepted Mesmer's view. Over the last several decades, modern experiments have proven the magnetic nature of these subtle healing energies.

Experimental evidence from researchers like Dr. Justa Smith, Dr. Bernard Grad and Dr. John Zimmerman have increased the knowledge bank of empirical data supporting laying on of hands healing. Dr. Zimmerman at the University of Colorado School of Medicine demonstrated significant increases in the intensity of magnetic fields emitted by healers' hands. The earth's magnetic field, known as the Schumann resonance, vibrates at 7.8 cycles per second. Some healers have had the energy from their hands measured at the exact same frequency. NASA uses magnetic-field generators on space missions that pulsate at that same 7.8 cycles per second as a background signal to maintain optimum health and functioning of the astronauts. This magnetic field may act as a carrier for other types of energetic and frequency information being passed onto patients.

Laying on of hands healing may be described as a magnetic healing. Not only is there magnetic fluidum, the Earth is magnetic as well. The effects are on the physical/etheric levels of rebalancing and are performed within close proximity of the person. Varieties of healing energies occur along a spectrum of phenomena and there are many frequencies accessible in the magnetic field. All you need is to have the receiver tuned to pick up the information on that frequency; in the same way each radio station has a particular calibration number. Your hands act as receivers for particular vibrations and different locations tune in specific frequencies, which may then in turn be applied in healing or creative applications.

On top of all of the scientific energetic theory, the real force of healing comes from the heart. Otherwise every home would have a magnetic field generator to dial in the frequency cure for ailments and health care practitioners would be obsolete. Compassionate touch has a profound capacity to make whole and heal. Nurturing touch brings us into the healing power of the present.

Loving hands are healing hands.

Your hands are healing hands.
